10 Reasons Why Homestay Could Be Worse

Here are 10 reasons as to why homestay in Japan could be a worse choice than having your own apartment.

  1. Irresponsible host family. Your host parents might not be qualified as hosts. They could just be doing it to supplement their income.
  2. Curfew. Almost all college dormitories in Japan have curfews, but curfews aren't exclusive to dorms...
  3. No internet connection.
  4. No choice. You have little freedom in choosing your host family, because exchange students and host families are matched randomly.
  5. Bad location. You might end up in the mountains.
  6. No shower. Not all houses have showers with running water.
  7. No prior information on your host family. Your host dad might be a complete douchebag, or an erojiji (dirty old man).
  8. Your host family doesn't spend time with you.
  9. Language barrier. For some this is a benefit. But if you're not into learning Japanese, it can be frustrating not being able to communicate with your hosts.
  10. Lack of freedom. It can be troublesome to inform your host mom every time you're going to be late for dinner.
