I'll have to get a copy of that book!

But it's unfortunate that so many pictographs have become obscure over the centuries. We'll have to see if they're going to replace 馬 with 車 sometime soon!Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00970258650899208995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4252197110692372510.post-9644378254585501442009-09-16T18:20:04.899+09:002009-09-16T18:20:04.899+09:00@Eric, the original meaning of 験 was "examine...@Eric, the original meaning of 験 was "examine" rather than "test"; as in, to examine horses. Makes sense when you look at the history of the character. "A Guide to Remembering Japanese Characters" gives a great breakdown of kanji development.

@Sherly, many kanji were devised with elements according to how they *sounded* rather than what they literally meant. The horse element sounds like "ma"; as in "mama." "Sounds by association" are included in kanji, too. Ever wonder why mosquito is written as 蚊? The left element is insect, and as for the right, what sound does a mosquito make when it flies? ぶ~ん.

Pretty interesting stuff.john turningpinhttp://madtokyo.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4252197110692372510.post-83251724265075379712009-09-16T02:50:53.724+09:002009-09-16T02:50:53.724+09:00Great!
